S.D. State Parks offer a weekend full of winter fun
PIERRE, S.D. – Three of South Dakota’s state parks are offering opportunities to enjoy the winter outdoors the weekend of Feb. 6-7.
- Eagles and Bagels Walk in the Park, Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Fort Pierre, Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. CST, meet at group lodge. Information will be presented by State Division of Wildlife employee and avid birder Doug Backlund. The group will travel into the park for a one-and-a-half-mile guided walk to observe the birds in their natural setting. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, cameras, comfortable hiking shoes and cold-weather clothing. Pier 347 is providing bagels, and coffee and juice will also be available at the Oahe Downstream group lodge after the walk. Info: 605-223-7722.
- Ice Bowl Disc Golf Tourney, Richmond Lake Recreation Area near Aberdeen, Feb 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST. The cost is $12 per person, plus four non-perishable food items for the local food pantry. Discs are guaranteed for the first 25 entrants. Divisions include: open, amateur and women. Prizes will be awarded for winners in each division. Chili and hot chocolate will be provided. - Snowshoe Stomp Walk in the Park, George S. Mickelson Trail, Feb. 6, 1 p.m. MST. Staff will teach basic snowshoeing skills on a nature walk along the Mickelson Trail in the northern Black Hills. The locations will be determined based on snow conditions. Call the Black Hills Trails Office to sign up and to find out where to meet. Info: 605-584-3896
- Winter Wonderland Snowshoe Hike, Richmond Lake Recreation Area near Aberdeen, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. CST, meet at the warming shelter on Forest Drive. Staff will teach basic snowshoeing skills before a mile-long walk in the park. Snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Refreshments will be provided. Info: 605-626-3488.
The Walk in the Park program is a series of educational, guided hikes held throughout the year in South Dakota state parks, recreation areas and nature preserves. Parks staff and volunteers lead the programs.
