South Dakota Camping Reservations Open Feb. 19 2011

PIERRE, S.D. – Visitors planning camping trips to South Dakota state parks and recreation areas will soon be able to make reservations for the summer camping season.

"The number of campers at state parks has increased in the past several years," said Doug Hofer, director of the Division of Parks and Recreation. "The growing number of people camping in South Dakota state parks makes reservations even more important.”

Reservations for camping in most state parks can be made within 90 days of arrival dates. The first day to make reservations is Feb. 19 for a May 20 arrival. May 20-22 is Open House Weekend in South Dakota state parks. During Open House Weekend, no entrance fees are charged, but camping fees still apply.

Camping reservations are available for dates between May 20 and Sept. 5 in most parks. A limited number of parks also accept autumn reservations through Oct. 10. Reservations for Memorial Day weekend can be made beginning Feb. 26 for a May 27 arrival. Reservations are currently being accepted for the entire camping season for campsites at Custer State Park and for lodges in all state parks and recreation areas.

Reservations can be made online at or by calling 1-800-710-2267. The telephone reservation center is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (CST). Online reservations may be made 24 hours a day, though campsites do not become available until 7 a.m. on the first day of the 90-day window, both online and at the call center. There is a $7.70 per site non-refundable reservation fee, which does not apply to South Dakota residents.

People may sign up to receive text message reminders about reservation openings for holiday weekends. Text “SDGFP ROD” to 368638. Message and data rates may apply.
The full 90-day window calendar can be found online at

Funding Available for Trails
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota State Parks Director Doug Hofer announced today that applications are being accepted for grants from the Recreation Trails Program (RTP) for trail projects sponsored by municipalities, counties, state parks, civic organizations or tribal governments.

“Recreation trails are key elements to healthy communities,” Hofer said. “They provide safe recreational corridors in which families can exercise together and enjoy some of our state’s many unique natural resources.”

The Recreational Trails Program provides partial reimbursement for approved trail projects. Eligible projects include constructing new public trails, rehabilitating existing public trails, developing trail-related facilities, and educational programs that specifically address recreational trail issues. The application deadline is Friday, April 8, 2011.

RTP funds come to the state through the Federal Highway Administration, and are apportioned to states by Congress to fund both motorized and non-motorized public recreation trail projects. The amount of funds available is based upon the number of recreational vehicles licensed in each state.

Application packets are available online at the Game, Fish and Parks website. For more information contact Grants Coordinator Randy Kittle at 605.773.5490 or by e-mail at
