Belle Fourche Reservoir - Wednesday, August 11, 2010 | |
Was thinking about camping up here some where on the free side this weekend... but with Sturgis going on I was thinking that its going to be pretty full. Anybody been up there and seen what kind of mad house it is? Think I could get a spot some where, dont want to drive up there and have to turn around and go to Angy!

I was out last Saturday fished from 7:00AM-12:00PM. I caught 5 slot and 4 dinks. I was catching some nice size perch that made a nice dinner. It was hot when we left the parking lot 102 on the thermometer.

Another good day for the most part. Fish seemed to be in the 15 foot only range today. Pulled in a bunch of little cigars, 6 13-15 inchers, 5 in the slot, only 2 over 18", and even a smallmouth bass. Seemed weird that I didn't catch very many over's, but that figures because those are the only one's I keep. They seem to be picky about which colors they wanted, so if you find one that works stick to it. Good luck!

Went out yesterday (21st) and did fairly well. We didnt hit the water until 12-12:30 and fished until ~7. The wind was strong so we trolled with the wind on the flat. Caught about 15 fish and alot were little cigar walleye's and some 14-15 inchers. We lost ALOT of bites which I assume were little ones, which I am glad there are still some in the lake. Between the two of us we kept four. Normally we would have thrown the two 14 inchers back but they were gut hooked by the noobie so they went on the stringer. Bite was anywhere from 10-25 fow on leeches, minnows, and worms. I don't think the fish out there are very picky so good luck to all and throw those little ones back please.

Had good luck this last weekend between the storms. Sat. a.m. two of us caught 23 fish and kept 3. A hand full of 8-10 inchers caught in that group, it was good to see. Sun. a.m. was even better. I caught and released 32 fish by my self. Had one worm left when the horn blew for the storm coming so I packed it up. Kept two fish out of that group and again caught a nice variety of size fish. At cleaning station on Sunday a.m. a group of 3 people came in and I watched them clean two 8 inch walleyes. Please spread the word to release those small fish. Fished in 8-20 foot. All methods were productive between jigs, lindys, and bouncers. Stayed clear of islands and crowds. Fishing pressure was amazing on Sunday...to be expected, lots of good Dads out there!!!

Hello Fellow Fishermen in S.D.
I will be up your way during Sturgis Rally (August 9th) week - wanted to take in some Eye fishing on Belle Fourche - anyone want to take a fellow angler out or know of any guides around? I would be glad to buy the beer and gas for the day! |

I also agree with SteveM. We all need to be aware of this. Look at what's happened to our surrounding walleye fisheries. Let's not let that happen with Belle. Call these people out and educate them to how they are hurting the fishery by keeping those small fish, and large females for that matter. WE all love to eat an eye, I'm not against that and I like to keep a couple myself, but WE should be more concerned with preserving our resource before WE have ruined it. So those who do nothing to prevent these actions, are just as guilty who observe these actions and do nothing. WE can be nice and informative, but WE still need to raise the concern. |

I agree with steveM, wasn't always the unwritten rule that fish under 11"/12" are too small to eat/clean anyway? We all need to be proactive and tell people who clean fish that small are doing nothing to help the fishing situtation. Good to see the small ones showing up though!

Fished Sunday and did pretty well. Most surprising was the number of under fish caught. Over the last year I thought most had disappeared LOL! but, ran into several in the 14" range. Didn't take any home but could have had a decent limit. Fish were shallow, didn't seem to matter once you found them. Had lots of slots and a few overs as well. Boat traffic wasn't bad at all, a real nice day too!
The slot creates an interesting situation. I too am no biologist but I'd be very curious to see what the GFP has for data on the slot so far. The pressure on the lake is high, I don't know much that can change that. In the 14" minimum days, you had to sort like crazy to find a legal fish. Now, it seems like things are the same but just a bit different. Now, you struggle to find the under slot fish, while the overs are much easier. Guess it comes down to what you want. I don't keep fish every outing, just like catching. I'd rather have the quality of fish we have now than the previous regs gave us. However, I hope the smaller fish getting more pressure doesn't affect the future too heavily. Who knows. I'd be all for a two fish limit, but many I know would go crazy if that were the case. Heck, some can't hardly handle throwing back the slot fish LOL! |

Hello all,
fished for five or six hours and brought home one 18.3 and one 14.5. When I was at the fish cleaning station there were alot of 9,10,11,and 12 inch fish being cleaned but that is what the slot limit says you can keep. I don't get it. May be they should reduce the limit to 2 fish with 1 of them over 18 inches. I'm not a biologist and don't claim to be one. This is just my opinion for what it's worth. Very well said!! fishing is like golfing. Make the best of it!! If the your fishing and someone rolls in too close to you, bite your lip and be a better man!! If you don't , I promise it will ruin your whole day!! But sometimes people are are just so pissed off at life that they would rather throw a #7 Daredevil at someones neck than to just be a better person!!

Fished Sunday & Monday, partial days each. Sunday was a good day, lots of fish in the slot and plenty of overs. Monday I didn't do as well, but not bad. Fish seem scattered, one here one there, and at different depths. Water temp was in the low 60's, the best fishing should be right around the corner.
As far as the boating complaints, I guess I have not really experienced anything too terrible. Yeah, at times some things are done that don't make me too happy, but it is seldom. Maybe my expectations are different, but seldom do I have a boat come too close or drive by me too close when they have a large area to drive otherwise. The law says 50 feet, correct? Not that the 50 feet is what I would consider "courteous" in all situations, but in some it is fine. I absolutely hate playing bumper boats, but I have been in some fishing situations out there where we had a lot of boats in a small area and everyone was very, very courteous. I'll be honest, 50 -75 yds doesn't get me wound up. I don't want a boat ripping by at WOT at 50 yards, but what can one do? If a guy pulls up between me and shore that is 75 yards away, so be it. That is 3/4 of a football field. Plenty of room. I guess my point is that each has different expectations. I always try to be courteous and treat others the way I want to be treated. Always idle in and out of spots, don't crowd people, and give plenty of room to boats fishing while I run from spot to spot. Bottom line is I am there to enjoy myself, getting worked up about a boat or two that gets a little close does nothing but ruin the enjoyment for me, so I don't get worry about it much. |

Oh ya, the best I found is a Poe's giant jackpot, top water, worst come to worst whip it out in front of them and let the prop suck up a mile of 80 lb braid! They wont be back on the water for a few weeks with that repair!
