GF&P are wanting to change the season start date for the east river deer season to start on the saturday before thanksgiving, I don't know about all of you guys out there but the rut was pretty much over by then last few years. Adding to the weather that we get into up north that time of year will make it much tougher of a hunt.  Just somthing to think about anyway heres the link for the meeting notes on the change.

I think they are doing this in order to prevent what happened last year.  Certain years there is an extra weekend in november.  Normally we have the first weekend of november as the hills deer seasons first weekend.  The following weekend, west river opens, the 3rd weekend east river opens, and then thanksgiving follows after.  Usually nov. has 4 weekends, but this past year it had 5.  I think this is ok.  Think about it like this.  The rut causes the bigger deer to come out and be seen and get shot.  If the season starts after the rut you give the deer another year to mature.  I for one would like to see deer gain another year and be bigger the following year.  Look at some states that don't allow rifles, and even have a firearm season in December, after the rut.  These states are becoming well known for big bucks.  If it isn't about the rack, shoot a doe, theres a lot of them around.

Once the weather gets bad then the road hunters can't drive around on as many roads up north.  The ruts over so the bucks aren't standing out in the fields for the road hunters to shoot them.  That's the only reason I can see that anyone would complain about this change.  I like it, gives me another week to bowhunt in most years.  It also gets thr ifle start date closer to where it was awhile back.

looks like it could be another late getting the crops off year, so the later the season the better. I dont call walking sunflower fields for deer, hunting, I call it misery. We just went home last year early of the first week and went the next weekend, and did the best the last weekend. I know other areas may be different, but where I hunt, most everything is farmed and if the crops are all up yet, you can hunt GPA's and WPA's and walkins and many very good looking areas until you are blue in the face, the deer are in the crops, period. They do come out at night though, so be carefull driving home.

One more thing, we seen bucks still running with does the last day of buck season last year, one monster is still out there, and he had about a dozen does with him. Escaped into the last field of sunflowers that was still standing.
