We went out on new years. Half the lake was open water (by the dam) and there were some randome 6x6 holes in the ice for some reason. Caught a few perch, walleye, and pike. All were really small, and the water was murky as usual.

last time I heard, there was a lot of open water on newell. this was about a week and a half ago.

I tried there early dec. and the water was very murky and not fish on the vex or flags but only fished for a couple hours and was the first time on the lake.

Has anyone tried Newell this year? I dont need any open water info or last year info. I know the lake well and have my favorite spots already. The last few years the water has been murkey and the fishing poor so I have not been trying it. With the dry weather and lack of runnoff I wonder if the clarity is better? If so the fishing should be better and back to good old newell. Any water clarity info could help me save some time and gas!!!

From my experience over the last few years you wont have to worry about it. It's unlikely you will catch anything worth eating out of that mud hole anymore. GF&P sure could do a lot with Newell if they wanted to. Too bad. It could be a nice little place to go.

ya i heard that, but it doesnt really affect you unless your 80 or 8. there is a very small amount and its not even to the dangerous amount yet. so if you go there and catch some fish and eat them, your not going to die

I was just told not to eat any of the fish from newell lake because its high in mercury. Has anyone else heard this?

jigged and used tip ups from 5 to 25 FOW and not even a nibble on the eastside by the bathroom, this is the 2nd time in the last week we have been there in a week and it is dead.

Went on sat...posted up by the camp ground area on the other side of the lake. Started at about 8-10 Ft had one flag go up little 7 inch walleye. Moved a little deeper, out to about 16-18ft and nothing. might head back out next sat to try closer to the dam. Weather was nice, little windy but all in all a good day. Didn't stay to long about 4 hours.

Fished the middle of the lake just off a shelf from 12-16 ft with very little action. One walleye off tip up and marked a few on the Vex but no action. Nice day on the ice though. |

went out to newell lake on thursday. we set up by the dam in 11-20 FOW. had 2 flags go up right at sunset. both out of the 11 foot hole. caught one walleye about 14 inches. very healthy looking fish. i think we were out a little too deep we are going to try back today and set up in 7-11 feet. i think the walleyes are pretty shallow yet this early in the year. if there is a better spot on the lake to catch walleyes besides the dam i would love to know. i will report again after we go

I went out again on sunday and caught a nice 19 inch walleye around noon. That was the only fish we caught. We did miss a few flags. Pretty slow, but good ice.

Went out on the ice toady. caught one little pike and that was it. water is murky and the ice is a solid 6 inches
