Oahe and Northern Pike Fishing

Lots of snakes showing up in the system?  How is the size looking?  From what I've been hearing sounds like Oahe might be the best destination in the future to hook into a 20 plus pounder.

Northerns have really exploded with all the flooded brush over the past few years.  Hooked into a pile of 3-8# snakes this year on the N part of Oahe.  Don't know how they'll grow, but I'd say potential will be good for big, big fish in a few years.

I would say that as long as the water stays up and the bays are filled, this place is going to be one of the most sought after pike fisheries in the world once again.

I remember the Sak dynasty on pike fishing.  Our 1980's populations are disappearing and we are in the current rebuild mode.  Oahe and Sak will be big pike destinations like you said.  I miss running to a flag wondering if a hog will be at the other end!

No doubt about it though, there will be flags to chase this year.  Like Oahe, Sak has a bunch of little guys in the system.  Some probably pushing the six pound range already.  One thing about it, it don't take much to grow a northern!

I caught 3 10 lb pike last summer, usually catch at least that many most summers, and lots of little guys.   The hammer handels are a plenty.  I had two that snagged a tree before I got a chance to get them up, they were big fish, could have been 20 lbers, I'll never know.

Rowdie,  I would say that you're going to have plenty chances at 20+ lb pike in the upcoming years if you fish for them.

Yah the Pike are on the upswing again.  We caught quite a few nice ones on crankbaits this summer and ice fishing we have seen 3 or 4 pike in the 4-8lb range.  No doubt in my mind that the pike bite will be good for the next few years.  We have caught 4 trophies from shore or ice in the past 6 years.  IMO they never went away, sometimes the spring bite is just better than other times.  There were alot of really nice ones caught from shore south of whitlocks this spring.

Have not really targeted Pike before but I would like to set up a couple rigs to target the big pike. What are the best setups? Is it still the smelt?

Smelt on red treble hooks is my favorite  Or a big red single hook through the nose and a large red treble trailer hook through the back fin.  I havent had luck with casting daredevils for several years.  Thats just my opinion and experience when fishing the mobridge-akaska area.  It might be way different further south.

Definitely smelt rigs in the early spring after ice off.  You'll catch a ton trolling cranks shallow as well.  Usually, a better population can be found in the bays.
