"The early spring fishing in Northeastern South Dakota has been hot. The water temp. is currently 58-60 degrees (May 13). The walleye bite has been very active in 6-8 feet of water. The northern bite has just exploded in the past couple of days with the warm temps. The smallmouth have been active in their pre-spawn locations with many fish over 18-19 inches. Also there has been a fun and very active White Bass bite."
We are on the tail end of lake turnover which is very good. Air Temps are supposed to be in the 80’s the end of the week. I am not sure we will make 80 but the 70’s is perfect with the cooler nights. If you are looking for a guide, Gary is very good. Give us a call and we will set you up.

In addition to the 4 fishing pictures that Gary sent I am enclosing a you tube of Ron Schara’s group filming here at Roy Lake Resort. It is very good and shows the fishing, the resort and the area very well. It is a great place for everyone so that means you can come more than once a year. Truthfully, there is only one person who might not like it here and that is the person who likes to shop malls. The closest mall is 1.5 hrs. away. I hate to shop so it works out great for me.

Check out the you tube. It is very well done and represents everything for everyone…of course, except mall shoppers.

What a Spring….What a Winter…… Not sure what to think of this winter. Fishing was excellent but most
People didn’t realize that we did have ice until about 3 weeks ago. Not safe enough for driving but fishing was great on all lakes including Roy. At the end, the Northern fishing was excellent with 9-10 pounders plentiful and some 15’s. the guys were hoping to fish two more weeks but the last fish sent one foot thru the ice so
Everyone determined it was time to quit for the season. The first picture is a Smallie from April 2012. The other pictures are from May 2011 so you can get an idea of early spring fishing.

We are having an exciting Spring starting out with Al Lindner with Rich and Jeremy here for a few days. They had great fishing with Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass on a pretty aggressive bite. They were really excited about the size and number of Large Mouth as their numbers tend to go up and down. Al and friends did great on the walleye and Northerns too. The walleyes were excellent but they were just coming off the spawn so mostly males being caught. Nice fish and good eating along with Northerns. Combine that with great friends and there isn’t anything better. We had a great fish fry. Thanks Al, can’t wait to do it again. The Smallie Fishing has been excellent with being assured of at least some 5 lb. Smallies. They are so much fun and so pretty. The Large Mouth were in the 4-6 lb. range. We did have some earlier Large Mouth in the 7 lb. range last Fall. The Bass haven’t spawned yet, but that should be coming in the next couple of weeks. The Northerns have spawned and the Walleye are just getting over their spawn so I am thinking the bite should really take off between the 26th of April and 1st of May.

Water temperatures were in the 50’s but we had a brutal storm last weekend….no tornadoes, just heavy wind and about 5 inches of rain, brought water temps from the mid 50s to the mid 40’s. Air temps are now going up with mid-70’s predicted for next week.

Isn’t it great to get such an early start on fishing. Give us a call and kick off the season early with a great fishing trip.

We are opening up C-1 thru 8 now and should be finished by the end of next week. Condo cabins are open year around. Give us a call for dates for your fishing trip Don’t forget we are an excellent place for the family as well.

You probably can believe it now, as it happened a week ago.  The ice went off.  Water temperatures are in the mid 50's and the fish are biting.  But they have not spawned yet and that includes Northerns too.  This is a new Ballgame for us.  As usually the Northerns spawn at ice off then the walleyes then the Bass.  My suspicion is that in addition to temperature the gestation period may also be a factor.  I guess we will find out as we go along.

I hope people will consider putting fish back that have not spawned yet, but still keeping some to eat.  It is such a fine line, and it is hard to make an armchair decision when you are not in the boat.

The last day of ice fishing people were fishing in the channel and getting mostly 8 to 10 lb. Northerns with a couple of 15 pounders, approx..

People have been catching just this week walleyes, bass and Northerns.

I guess the message is get your boats ready and go fishing or use my guide Gary.  Either way works great.  The cabins are open and we look forward to seeing you.

As of Jan. 31 we currently have 16-17 inches of good ice, but there are still several danger spots (thin ice and open water). You cannot tell where the open spots were due to ice and snow on top. If possible ask first and use your spud bar as you talk in area. The fishing continues to be excellent for early morning and late evening walleyes. The perch bite is good one day and spotty the next, but lots of nice 10-11 inch perch can be caught. The pike bite is good on almost any lake that you try. The pike are in the bays and very active through the day. The most important thing about fishing the glacial lakes is safety first and be sure to obtain the knowledge were the most active bite is taking place. Just ask Jan or have coffee with her guide Gary.

Enjoy these pictures of ice fishing this winter. More to come as everything is lining up to be a
Great ice fishing season. Weather is perfect with sun shining, no wind, and no snow.

All species, crappie, perch, walleye and northern are biting and just all of the lakes are giving up
Fish. I think these pictures tell the story.

Ice is about 10-12” but there are some lakes that have open spots and because there is no snow
The ice above dark bars maybe thinner. This early in the season we recommend using 4-wheelers but people are
Driving their trucks out.

I hope you can line up your family or your buddies and come out and give it a try. In the meantime just click on the
Pictures and drewl…..

I even went fishing last week and couldn’t keep the 19-20 inch smallies off my line. Everyone has been excited about the fishing including Large Mouth Bass, Walleyes and Northern and even a few perch in between. I had a great time and I can tell you the time to come is now or anytime during the next 4 or 5 weeks.

Gary and Scott (Congratulations Scott….he is getting married Saturday) have been busy guiding so call ahead if you want them to guide. I can promise you: you will not be disappointed.

Fishing has been good and getting better. The adjustment from spring to summer fishing usually takes a couple of days and this morning, people were catching bass, northern and some walleyes. We have had a fabulous spring fishing. Water levels are good, some high water, but ramps are good and most roads are good. We are running about 1.5 feet over full which is pretty considered what is happening in other areas. My prayers to those who are experiencing the most discouraging feelings of dealing with flooding. I have been dealing with high water for 18 years and, great for fishing, can certainly be challenging.

The lake is breathtakingly beautiful, especially early morning and later in the evening.
Temperatures are in the 80’s and low 70’s at night. One storm at 1:00 a.m. so we slept thru it. We are having the perfect summer so far and wish you were here to enjoy it with us.
In addition to fishing, we have a beautiful swimming beach, canoe rentals, frisbee golf, 3 golf courses and horseback riding as well as places to see such as Fort Sisseton, the best preserved Frontier fort in the U.S. the only thing we don’t have is traffic and malls. We even have casinos in the area.

I hope you will give us a call and enjoy the quiet but fun life here at the resort and community.

Jan

Give us a call for cabin availability. I always suggest having a backup date in case there aren’t any openings for your first selection.

If you haven’t been here yet this year, or are planning a trip there are 2 things you must know: The fishing is fabulous and the weather is terrific. Even if we get a rain shower it lasts 5 minutes to an hour and then the sun is out again. It is a beautiful time to be here. The lake is about 2 feet over full with great temperatures in the 70’s and nights in the 50-s. Great sleeping weather.

Walleyes, Northerns and Bass are biting and everyone is catching fish, particularly from a boat. Even on Cattail the roadside fishing is taking off.

We do have 3 condo cabins open starting today, Sunday, 6/19/11. C-11 would have a check out on the 23rd and 9 and 10 are open thru Thursday.

C-1, 4,5 and 15 are open from Tuesday the 5th of July with a check out on the 8th of July.

Starting the 10th of July C-2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 11,14, and 15 are open until the 15th. If you are wanting to come later, give us a call and we will give you the dates.

We hope to see you come and stay and have a good time fishing and a fun time with family and friends.

Greeting to all
This coming  fall 2011, the plan is to go to Roy Lake mid to late September for a weeks worth of fishing.  The talk is that Roy Lake is a great lake for Small Mouth.  Since this would be our first time there, I would really appreciate any suggestions on where to fish and lure ideas.  The majority of us are use to doing the casting into the shore and weed bed lines rather than open water drifting. Any resposes would be most appreciated. Please resone to my e mail for long details or down load maps.     jgbecker@cbpolice.org
Thanks for your help

Heading out to Roy in two weeks, wondering if anyone has been out?  We plan on fishing for bass and walleye, and trying to decide what to bring.  We have never fished Roy before and also wondering what part of the lake is best?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I tried Roy for smallies but the wind was howling and weather threatening so I can't say it was a good effort. I threw some Rapalas to the bank without a bite and then switched to a large Strike King spinnerbait. I hooked a 20 incher on my third cast and it was the only one I would land before being stormed off the lake,  I talked with another angler at the boat ramp and he told me he had caught several very nice smallies on small cranks in 10-15 feet of water. I will go there again.
