Waubay Lake - Sunday, November 4, 2012
By: on 11/04/2012 11:00 AM | Add Comment | Post New Report |
Fished Waubay Lake yesterday.  Caught a 32 in. Northern, 21 in. walleye, and some smaller 14-17 in. walleyes.  Used a chartreuse jig, alternating between minnows and chubs.  Leaving the line alone and dragging bottom worked along with casting ahead of the boat and leaving on the bottom until the boat caught up then dragging for a minute or two.  The slower the better.  Started snowing and fished for a couple of hours longer.  Got cold and headed for the shack!  Cougar

2 of us fished the south end of Waubay on Sunday.  Picked up 5 walleyes (16-17" fish) fishing jigs and live bait rigs with minnows, all in the space of our first ninety minutes on the water.  Then, at about 11:30 am, like a switch was flipped, they completely shut off, and I searched all over trying to mark fish.  Got off the lake at 3:00 with our 5 fish and called it good.  It was a little breezy, but otherwise a great fall day to be out on the lake.

Just wondering if anyone has ventured out to Waubay yet?  Just got the boat out of storage and hoping for some decent weather in the weeks to come.  Last year at this time the walleyes were biting pretty good.

I am also interested in this HighView subdivision. Sounds like a housing development on higher ground, probably at  or near the northeast side of Waubay lake. But I really dont know. Its a term I am not familiar with in the relm of ice fishing.

Fished the last seven days with much success.  Wed., thurs.and friday had warm temps.  Ice was around 8 inches on north end of lake.  Friday had the most traffic with around 30 vehicles parked near Highview subdivision.  Most were using 4-wheelers and portables.  Limits of perch and a few good walleyes were caught by most everybody.  Perch were between 11 and 13 inches with lots of shorter fish. Small minnow or wax worms in 22 fow.  Moved 21 foot permanent out friday night with ranger.  Fished in it when colder temps moved in from Sat. to Mon.  Ice was almost 12 inches by tuesday morning.  Pickups and permanents were all over the north end by Sunday night.  Released a lot of 10 to 14 inch walleyes in the early mornings and evenings.  Perch bite was usually good all day long.  Never had to move around much once the fish were located.

If you did not get out on Waubay this past weekend to do some november perch fishing you missed out on the best run the lake has had for over seven years. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday conditions were perfect for perch fishing with many 12 and 13 inch perch.  Walleyes were also numerous but  there was a lot of small ones less than 14 caught.  Perch were schooled in 23 to 27 fow.  Fished minnows on 1/8 or 1/4 jigs.  Also used small jigging spoons with was worms.

Waubay Lake - Saturday, July 17, 2010
Fished a small lake in the Glacial Lakes area this morning. Enterting the report under Waubay because the lake is not registered with SDO or the TON. We were on the water by 8 and off by 1130. Picked up our two man limit of walleyes ranging from 16 to 22 inches pulling plugs along the weedlines.

Fishing report from June 14th to 22nd.  The first three days were on agian off again rain showers and moderate wind.  Walley were very spread out in the 13 to 15 foot depths.  Was able to catch decent sized fish anchoring to trees during windy periods using light jigs and slip boobers with minnow. Otherwise slow trolling jigs or spinners along gradual sloping points.  17th and 18th were extremely windy but solid sunshine fished windswept shorelines drifting with bottom bouncers and spinner or floating pink jig heads.  Saturday thru tuesday weather was very stable with light winds.  Thunderstorms a couple of nights would drive the fish deeper in the mornings 20-22 feet of water.  But afternoon and evenings  they would move back shallow to 8 to 12 feet near weed lines.  Best fishing was around sunken islands and main lake points that went out from the shore a long way.  There are several of these points from state ramp  south of Grenville to school bus point.  Fish were moving around these areas depending on wind direction.  It seemed they would always stack up on the windward side.  Most fish between 14 and 17 inches.  Also caught fish along points north of duck island, south side of Helwig's island and long point west of opening into Breske's bay.  Smallmouth is very good right now near any trees or roadbeds near shore throwing spinner baits.  White and yellow are the best and don't be suprised when you hook a northern.  Bluegills are spawning near weedlines and gravel bottoms.  Once you find them they are very good sized.  Cast weighted bobbers and 1/16 or 1/8 jigs tipped with small piece of worm.  Areas were you find weedbeds and  rocks on a roadbed are the key to finding the bluegill.  White bass are done spawning and can be caught throwing or trolling small crankbaits in about any bay.  As far as bait for walleyes what ever is easy to keep alive will work.  Penny at the sportmart in grenville will recommend crawlers on pink or yellow spinners which she is well stocked of.  Any one heading up to fish and is looking for enough room for two familes or larger group go to vacationsfrbo.com and search waubay or give me a call at 712-790-9688.
