Waubay Lake - Sunday, January 17, 2010
Fished 15, 16 and 17th on north waubay. Could not use the large portable ice house due to heavy snow. Fished with portables off of ice. Walleye bite was good after patterning them. they would bite 6am to 9am and then from 3pm to 6pm. Fished 19 feet of water east of the hump south of lovers lane. Monday morning caught six perch and limit of walleyes from 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning. Used minnows for jumbo perch on bobbers and best action fro walleyes was on frostie jigging spoon with two or more wax worms. Most people were using trucks and portables. Four wheelers can get around close to the trails. By the way the weather was beautiful. |

Waubay Lake - Saturday, November 7, 2009
The perch and walleye are biting very good in the north end of Waubay. Most boats were anchored south of buckshot in around 21 to 22 feet of water. They were concentrated in two locations most of friday and saturday. Minnow heads on 1/8 or 1/4 jigging spoons worked the best. Also caught fish on a three way crappied rig with 3/8 ounce bell siker on bottom. None of the bait shops had small minnows so had to sort the smaller minnows when fishing them live. Also used wax worms but caught more smaller perch. The females are making eggs and the biggest was 11 inches. Was able to catch limit of walleyes the last hour each day fishing points 14 to 16 feet. Green or white jig heads tipped with a minnow caught the most. A tip on minnow fishing with larger jig heads that helps keep the minnows on when jigging is putting on a 3" white grub and pulling off the tail. It helps keep the minnow behind the barb and not coming off when we were jigging aggresively. Water temp has not cooled off much the last week and with the warmer temps I don't think we will be ice fishing as soon as last year. Water level has risen about 9 inches since the first of October and it is very clear. No smallmouth to speak of but did not fish any shallower than 14 feet. Waubay Lake - Thursday, October 22, 2009
The weather cleared off thursday afternoon after three days of cold temps and rain. Was up chasing phesants and decided to try for some walleye. Fished north end of lake in 15 to 17 feet just south of lovers lane. Hooked first two fish in less than a minute with one on jig and minnow and lindy floater on other. Caught three person limit in about 30 minutes and then tried for perch but just caught more walleye. Orange was the hot color and needed to move really slow. Marked all kinds of fish. If the limit is changed to four after January 1 it will make for a very good ice fishing season.

Waubay Lake - Saturday, September 26, 2009
Was out on Waubay the last four days with good results. Started on Friday with on and off light rain and moderate wind. Fish were in 13 to 17 feet of water near dropoffs. Caught all walleye with silver or white spinners and either minnow or crawler. The big point at north east side of lake was where we fished the most. Picked up some in 12 feet right in front of the mansion also. The rain ended about 3pm and the fishing got better. Averaged about 8 fish per hour with three people in boat. Average size was about 15".
Saturday conditions were excellent and fish were biting every where. Used spinners to locate and then switched to white or minnow colored gulp. Between Duck Island and the rocky shoreline to the north produced the biggest fish. Also caught fish at south end near weedline in 5 to 7 feet.. Average walleye was about 17 " with a tremedous amount of fish showing up on the graph. The boat averaged about 20 fish per hour that was caught and released. Smallmouth were also on a feeding frenzy in the shallower water. Fished weedy point between west two islands and caught few perch on a half crawler and bottom bouncer. There were right on the bottom in 12 feet of water. Went to an aberdeen colored hook with a white beed and very short snell. I think the perch are just starting to school up and the next two weeks it will improve. Whites are moving shallow also and some friends staying with me caught a cooler full casting small crawdad colored crankbaits in 7 to 10 foot of water on the west side of school bus point and also the first rocky point west of there at the entrance to the big bay. They say whites are good as northern when you pickel them. Sunday and Monday brought very windy and cold conditions but still caught fish on north west side of lake near the grenville boat ramp. The biting fish were in 15' of water speed trolling silver spinner with minnows. Bass and perch slowed down considerably. There were four boats at the ramp monday afternoon and they all were able to get their fish. Monday morning was very cool 30 degrees at sun rise with bright sun and no wind. Jig fished a few rocky points with 3/8 short shank orange jig. All the fish were very sluggish and only had six bites from seven to ten in the morning. Water temp had dropped on the surface about 5 degrees. Marked a lot of suspended fish near the drops about 3 feet off the bottom. If anyone is headed to Waubay fishing and needs a place to stay or updated fishing info call me at 712-790-9688 or go to vacationsfrbo.com and search waubay. |

Waubay Lake - Monday, August 10, 2009
Fishing has stayed very good into August. Mainly due to cool temps and great water condition. Walleyes are bunched up feeding on crawdads. Deep weed beds near submerged main lake islands are producing the best fish. Silver or white floater spinners and leach work the best for locating fish. Then we use crawdad colored gulp with 3/8 jig head. Lots of 21 to 25 inch fish during low light hours or on days when there are clouds and a little chop. Real big fish are spread out in 22 to 23 foot flats. Tried planer boards and spinners one day when there was very little wind. Ran about 30 feet of line and inline weight with hammered silver two hook spinners below planer boards about 2.5 mph. Started at south of duck island and went all the way to big point on north east end of lake. Caught 5 different species and limit of nice walley.. Was geat action at times but easy fishing with kids in the boat. Pulling plugs has not worked very good. Seem to catch too many white bass and smallmouth and pick up floating moss and weeds. Anyone needing nice place to stay on the lake for upcoming tournament go to www.vacationsfrbo.com and go to waubay in southdakota or give me a call at 712-790-9688

Waubay Lake - Sunday, June 7, 2009
Have been fishing for the last seven days with very good luck. Leeches or crawlers tipped on white twister or white spinner get the most strikes. Main lake points near good drop offs produce steady fish but you have to sort through them. Found bigger fish on south end of lake. South of Duck Island in 15' of water is good and also east of there along the flats on east side of lake. The grade produced a lot of action for small mouth and whites with an occasional walleye. Not much action in the trees along lovers lane seems the fish have moved out. Weather was excellent with very little wind. The days it was very still we trolled crank baits blue and white were the best. Need lodging on waubay go to vacationsfrbo.com

Waubay Lake - Monday, May 25, 2009
Fished Waubay for the last seven days and was the best in years for post season walleyes. Lots of 17" to 20" fish. Fished main lake points near deep water. Bigger fish were in 17' to 20' on bottom bouncers and small green hook with either minnow or half of worm. Lots of smaller fish in shallower bay off of Grenville grade they were not as aggressive because of may fly hatch. Smallmouth and white bass were very abundant in trees near lovers lane and have been spawning for a week. Released dozens of smallies over 18", white bass up to three pounds. Cast white or charturuse trwisters into rocks along shore near trees or along road grade. Especially good first light or evening. Don't be suprised to catch walleye or northern in five feet or less when pitching jigs. Crappie were just starting in trees. Caught males between 10" and 14". They will begin spawning real quick. Fisherman needing lodging can go to vacationsfrbo.com and search waubay.

Waubay Lake - Friday, April 10, 2009
Walk out on the ice, drill a few holes, set tip-ups with minnows in 7 to 11 feet. Sit back and wait. Tuesday saw a guy pull one in that weighed 9.4. He got that one mounted. Also caught one 26 inches the day before. We fished there all week long and limited out more often than not. So on Wednesday morning I hooked a dandy. No fight from fish at all so pulled her up and she weighed 9.8. Took picture with phone, weighed her and gave her her freedom back. Got criticized for that, but am not avid walleye fisherman. Fish perch and gills, but had fun. Most of our keeper fish were 17-18 inches. And they would bite all day long. Never fished past 3 0r 4 in the afternoon. No perch whatsoever. Have fun, be safe.

Waubay Lake - Tuesday, March 24, 2009
The inlet into Waubay on grade is opened up and walleyes are being caught in the evening. Crappie rigs on the bottom seem to be working the best. There is a lot of current coming through the culvert under the road. Notherns can be caught on white double twister tails casting. No action on the ice to speak of.
On a more serious note, Day County has lost one of its finest conservationist. Clark Huggitt 52, died Monday unexpectedly at his house on Pickerel Lake. Clark and his wife Donna owned and operated Pickerel Lake Lodge for many years. Many Waubay fisherman and area hunters stayed at the lodge. Clark was always full of good hunting and fishing info and made sure everyone who stopped by the lodge enjoyed themselves. He was also a very generous steward of the land alway putting back what he harvested. Condolances can be sent to Pickerel Lake Lodge 2356 Miotke Road Grenville SD 57239 |
